the blob

i asked my friend for an easter sweet bread recipe. she emailed me back that after checking with her grandmother's recipe, she realized it called for 5 pounds of flour (she said she forgot that her grandmother was baking for the entire town of pawtucket, rhode island!). instead, she suggested that i check out emeril lagasse's portuguese easter sweet bread recipe. he's half portuguese and she has had success with several of his recipes. since it was 2 am in the morning i briefly perused his recipe and printed it out. after shutting down the computer, (everyone was sleeping), i realized that his recipe called for 5 pounds of flour also! what is the matter with these portuguese???? they're worse than us crazy italians! . . cooking for entire villages at once . . sheesh. well, i halved it . . (it's 2 am, i'm not thinking very clearly) and i came to the part where i added my second cup of flour as instructed . . i looked in my bowl . . and of course it was soup . . i looked at the recipe and reread . . "add the second cup of flour and THEN THE REST OF THE FLOUR . . " hmm . . the rest of . . yes! half of 5 pounds . . 2 1/2 pounds . . ohh mama mia, papa pia . . how much is already in??? 1/2 pound? ay yi yi . . in went my whole jar of white unbleached flour . . . . then i emptied half of the whole wheat . . . . . . somehow it all rose beautifully into a giant . . blob! i'm lucky it didn't eat ME . .

of course it's the most delicious easter sweet bread i've ever eaten!
