another rainy day in new york city

we spent this one at the playground. the light was incredible. my friend janet and i sat under our umbrellas in our bathing suits and worked on our knitting. the children ran around in the rain. it was just a little . . chilly!

a rainy day in rockaway

we thought we would have a nice hot, beach day in rockaway. we hopped in the car and tried to beat the impending storm . . no luck. but, we love the rain and as you can see, the rain didn't keep this child from enjoying bouncing up and down on her friend's giant trampoline. i think it must have added to the experience . . the little excerpt above is also interesting for the sisterly dynamic that is going on. c, who is bouncing, wants to know what happened in an upstairs room after she left it, but of course her sister doesn't want to answer out the window to the whole world . .

morning tea and more flowers on a drizzly day

my friend and i met for tea this morning at one of my favorite cafes, west 11th street cafe. (it's a favorite because they make good mochas and aren't a chain store. i am very weary of chain stores these days). actually, we had strawberry lemonade which made me feel cold so i'm having my tea now. we're supposed to head uptown to the museum of the city of new york for a field trip another friend put together. there was supposed to be a picnic beforehand, but the weather has scared us off. it's supposed to be grey and rainy all weekend. i have a friend who is going camping in new jersey. she bought plenty of raingear to take along. we were sure all those rainboots and coats and hats would deter any drops wanting to come from the sky . . but maybe not? c is also determined to see the cherry blossom festival at the brooklyn botanic garden (it's the one crowd scene i usually manage to tolerate). hmmmm, it will be interesting to see what the clouds bring, and to see how i deal with my life this weekend.

walking in the rain

yesterday, m and i walked home in the drizzle along madison avenue from her tech rehearsal. when we reached madison square park i felt so happy. madison park was so green and beautiful! there were people walking every which way with their umbrellas, talking on their cell phones, hurrying home. it was wonderful to be downtown again. i always feel so relieved to be . . downtown. and when we reach the west village . . it's like POOF this is the best place to be.
