inside out

"just because we're surrounded by four walls and a roof doesn't mean anything. it's still dangerous. the chances of something happening are just as great. anything could happen. any move is possible. i've seen it. you go outside. the world's quiet. white. everything resounding. not a sound of a motor. not a light. you see into the house. you see the candles. you watch the people. you can see what it's like inside. the candles draw you. you get a cold feeling being outside. separated. you have an idea that being inside it's cosier. friendlier. warmth. people. conversation. everyone using a language. then you go inside. it's a shock. it's not like how you expected. you lose what you had outside. you forget that there even is an outside. the inside is all you know. you hunt for a way of being with everyone. a way of finding how to behave. you find out what's expected of you. you act yourself out."

introducing jack

why does this dog look so cozy in his sleep? probably because he's all cuddled up on the blocked project i discussed below: a soft and comfy baby blanket. warning, this knitted item is NOT from a pet free home!

spiral baby blanket

i started this blanket last summer and i finished, if my memory serves me correctly (!), last september. so why am i only blocking it now? should i admit to something like this? actually, i blocked it last fall, but i stretched it out too much and the pink edging curled in. so it sat all winter in a white and red hanna andersson gift box on one of the myriad piles in my room, and i'm finally reblocking it. of course the impetus for the reblocking comes from the fact that the baby it's for is now one year old. AHHHH! i don't know where the time goes.
it's a beautiful spiral, which i love doing, and the yarn is knitpicks superwash; so soft! i have some lovely blue that i would like to start making into another spiral blanket. the baby it's for turns one in october. maybe i still have a little time?! the blanket you see here is supposed to have a pink flower in the middle. k. made one for me (the blanket is for her piano teacher), but (alas!), i've misplaced it. a new one has been requested, but not yet made! not surprising. i really should go get a crochet hook and wake her up and get her working this second, or it will never get done.

in the bronx at the garden

i had my second visit to the new york botanical garden today. after eating our sandwiches at the cafe by the conifer arboretum (we ran out of the house so fast we hadn't eaten breakfast, but m. made all our sandwiches, and even one for her friend who came with us) we all took the tram to the rose garden. it was warm and sunny and just beautiful out. and i could hear so many birds singing in the trees: a lot of red winged black birds. i love the sound of their call. i hear them often in connecticut and out on montauk too. the girls had fun rolling down a hill just north of the garden. they started playing screaming cheetahs and a young boy joined them. i warned them about being loud, knowing a security guard would just be itching to tell them to stop having fun, but the young boy didn't heed the warning. his cheetah call could be heard across to the other side of the rose garden and sure enough a guard came by. oh well. they got some good runs in!
the roses were very mature and lovely. and some were so wonderfully fragrant. i have to admit that my favorite rose garden is at the brooklyn botanic garden. there they have some wild and wooly shrubs! and one rose bush has a particular earthy and peppery scent that i love.
i was supposed to return for a tai chi class but i just couldn't leave. i love the gardens in the evening when closing time happens. the air is a little cooler and the energy a little quieter. the girls ran around the himalayan pine tree while i sat and knitted. then we drove to dinner at my friend's mother's house where she has been staying for the week. it's a lovely old house. it has a yew tree in front, and in the back is a mulberry tree and two fig trees. the mulberries were delicious! inside i sat and talked with her mom a little and got to see old family pictures. of course the pictures of my friend when she was little were adorable, but what i really enjoyed seeing were the sepia toned photos of her mom and dad when they were young. they were beautiful photos, and it was nice to sit there and imagine her mom's voice coming from the young woman in the album on my lap. after a delicious dinner of beet salad and broccoli and sausage and the best smoked mozzarella i've ever had, my friend did my tai chi form with me, so i'm happy that i still had my "class!" and we practiced it in their wildly overgrown and comely garden. that was special. i think maggie (my tai chi teacher) would have thought so too.

prices!

prices in my neighborhood can be a little absurd. i walked into my health food store the other day and stared in stupefaction at this chocolate ice-cream container in the freezer section. really, $6.99 for a pint of ice-cream? of course my daughter pointed out to me that it IS goat milk ice-cream and the name IS quite cute. la-loo. la-loo's goat's milk ice cream company: deep chocolate and vanilla snowflake. very pretty names! but . . we went with the stonyfield which was only $3.99; downright cheap in comparison. but there was still no chocolate in my bag so we high-tailed it over to dagostino's which always gets my goat (!) because they can charge crazy numbers too. $5.50 for haagen dazs chocolate. i know my sister will tell me to go for the turkey hill or the friendly's, but they just don't taste the same.
while at dagostino's i had fun comparing the horizon organic cheese slices (which i like to have on my sandwiches) with what i usually pay at my coop: only $6.49! (as opposed to the coop's $3.59). o
f course the creme de la creme is the boursin cheese ball: only $7.49 for the little guy, which i can buy for $1.89 at east village cheese and which i always feel very smug about. (i hope i haven't jinxed east village cheese. stores close right and left here because rents are raised astronomically).

bleary-eyed

so i'm setting up a blog and burning the midnight oil and i was wondering what my first sentence would be when i remembered that old james thurber tv show "my world and welcome to it." wasn't that james thurber? it was cartoon drawings and there was a little dog and the voice of the daughter was the same actress who played the daughter of phyllis on the mary tyler moore show. she also was in an episode of the doris day show. the girls and i watched that one day at nana's house. well, there you go. i'm just a child of the 60's and 70's tv world.
