another busy saturday part I: visiting nana

after c's repertory class we hopped in the car to drive to manhasset to visit nana in rehab. i was glad we were there early to sit with her in the garden courtyard and knit. we also had a fun game of "may i" up in the terrace dining room, where we had lunch together. (c is a "may i" whiz, however i lucked out today with lots of jokers!).

a manhattan/queens easter

since nana is recuperating from her hip operation in rehab in queens, we're having easter in nyc this year.

i often leave the easter baskets at either my mom's or my sister's . . but somehow they found their way into the apartment this morning.

hyacinth plants from nana . .

so after finally baking the blob (!) we were on our way to queens with nana's bunny bread.

we had it with minestrone soup before saying good-bye. we know nana will be so happy to return  home again soon!

on our way back to the city.

easter dinner at home . .

kale salad with roast chicken . .

and the naturally dyed eggs . .

 with delicious challah bread.

happy easter!

hospital visit

k and i went to visit my mom in the hospital today. she had a hip operation this past monday. she's doing well. she's not eating a whole lot, yet, but she's managing a little. she's still rather weak but can sit up and talk on the phone . . important things! we thought we were going to visit tomorrow so we were a little crazy getting out of the house this morning as i was preparing carrot soup and m was making blueberry muffins to bring to her. but finally k and i were on our way after purchasing the requisite mochas to keep us revvin' in the car. as you can see, k contentedly knitted away (as contented as one can be sitting in a hospital) while i sat on the bed and helped nana by handing her the phone whenever someone new called, handing her tissues, helping her move the bed up and down, and then helping her have some soup and her dinner when it was delivered. i started knitting a cotton napkin while i was there. real exciting, huh? i'm supposed to be working on a shawl for a lovely woman i know in santa barbara who lost her home in the tea fire in november. unfortunately, i am unable to decide on the proper yarn. i originally wanted to make her the storm shawl from handmaiden, but the seasilk feels a bit pricey so i'm trying to pick a yarn from knitpicks. ha. the indecision is rather painful and guilt inducing.

apple picking

we went apple picking. i like to go when it's quiet and everyone is in school but this year i picked the school holiday for yom kippur! when we pulled into the orchard parking there were so many cars and people walking every which way! luckily we were very behind in our day's schedule and were ready to pick apples when everyone else was leaving to have their dinner. the weather was beautiful and there was a corn maze to wade through while we waited for nana and nonno to arrive. we overloaded our bag and had to keep finding interesting ways of balancing apples upon apples while carrying the bag to the car. and, yes, we ate a lot of apples while picking.
