morning coffee

sometimes my friend and i like to meet at west 11th street cafe for a morning coffee . . or tea . .

morning tea and more flowers on a drizzly day

my friend and i met for tea this morning at one of my favorite cafes, west 11th street cafe. (it's a favorite because they make good mochas and aren't a chain store. i am very weary of chain stores these days). actually, we had strawberry lemonade which made me feel cold so i'm having my tea now. we're supposed to head uptown to the museum of the city of new york for a field trip another friend put together. there was supposed to be a picnic beforehand, but the weather has scared us off. it's supposed to be grey and rainy all weekend. i have a friend who is going camping in new jersey. she bought plenty of raingear to take along. we were sure all those rainboots and coats and hats would deter any drops wanting to come from the sky . . but maybe not? c is also determined to see the cherry blossom festival at the brooklyn botanic garden (it's the one crowd scene i usually manage to tolerate). hmmmm, it will be interesting to see what the clouds bring, and to see how i deal with my life this weekend.

life underground and a tour at the american folk art museum

these beings live underground at 14th street and 8th avenue. i always wondered about that alligator story . .
m and c and i had an amazing tour of the american folk art museum today with our friend arlene. m especially wanted to see paula nadelstern's kaleidoscope quilts. these beautiful quilts were also accompanied by an incredible display of kaleidoscopes by artists whose names i did not retain . . i'm thinking of calling the museum tomorrow to check on it. these kaleidoscopes were so incredibly intricate and beautiful, including their exteriors . . . we were all rather speechless . . there was also a diamond star quilt by rebecca savery (i'm forgetting the middle part to her name) made somewhere between about 1835 to 1845 . . which was so large and elaborate and beautiful to look at . . i loved studying the patch patterns and m claims to have one of the patterns in a square on a juggling block she recently received. i really wish the museum allowed photo taking . . i was a little sneaky the last time i was there but it wasn't possible today!
afterwards we ate lunch at lou's cafe (on 53rd, just west of 6th avenue). what a great place! we had delicious goat cheese sandwiches and cheesecake and cappucinos. it was all part of a bid and bump auction win from our church's fundraiser in november. we had a wonderful time with arlene.

my latest favorite mocha is at joe on waverly. this day c just had to have the cinnamon bun; the giant cinnamon bun which came with the giant hot chocolate. well if you're going to have something sweet, you may as well do it right.
